Saint Brithwald of Canterbury’s Life History
Brithwald, also known as Berthwald was born in mid seventh century. Nothing much of his early childhood life is known but his whereabouts have been known ever since he became abbot of a monastery in Kent as this is proven by the existence of a written charter from Hlothere, King of Kent in the year 679 AD.
He was later elected archbishop on July 1692 AD, after a two year long vacancy after Theodore’s death. The long vacancy was as a result of conflicts and constant attempts of various kings to gain control over certain sees. Eventually he was consecrated on June 29 693 AD, having traveled to France in fear that not all kings and bishops were in favor of his election. He was consecrated by Archbishop Godwin of Lyon.
He was involved in church governance as he established the bishopric of Sherborne in Wessex and it was during his reign that England’s last pagan kingdom, Sussex, was converted to Christianity. In his reign, King Wihtred of Kent exempted the church from taxation.
His time in office entailed efforts of battling Wilfrid’s desires to regain see of York and to reverse the division of York into Smaller dioceses.
A letter from Brithwald, sent to Bishop Forthhere of Sherborne, appealing to him to intercede with abbot Beorwold of Glastonbury to ransom a slave. he is remembered as the first of continuous series of native born archbishops in England despite existing two Anglo-Saxon archbishops before him.
Brithwald died on January 13 731 AD, in Canterbury and was buried there.
