St Carthach the Younger, also called Mo Chutu mac Fínaill, Carthage, Cuda, or Mochuda, was an Irish hermit and bishop. He was born in the 555 AD in County Kerry, Ireland and died in 637 AD in Lismore, Ireland. We celebrate his feast day on May 14 every year in the Catholic Church.

Saint’s Biography

Saint Carthach the Younger was a monk and a spiritual student of Saint Carthach the Elder in Ireland. In 580, he became a priest and hermit in Kiltallagh, Ireland.

Carthach attracted prospective students and in 590 founded a monastery in Raithean in County Offaly, Ireland, where he was abbot. Abbot-bishop of the district Fercal.

He wrote a rule for his monks and a metric poem with 580 lines. Carthach was banished from Raithean in 635 with 800 of his brothers. With them, he founded a monastery which later became the famous school of Lismore. He died in 637 at Lismore, Ireland.
