St Chrodegang of Metz Biography
St Chrodegang of Metz was the son of Sigram and Landrada. He was related to Pepin the short, The brother of Saint Opportuna of Montreuil. Chrodegang was educated at Saint Trod abbey. The secretary to Charles Martel. Also the Chancellor of France. Even while still holding such positions, he went about in hair shirts, praying, fasting and supporting the poor.
The Bishop of Metz, France in 742 even though he was still a layperson. The chief minister of Pepin the Short. Chrodegang was the Ambassador to the Vatican. He was also the Mayor of the palace.
Chrodegang was involved in the coronation of Pepin as king of the Franks, the first Carolingian King. He defended Rome and the papacy against the Lombards. St Chrodegang worked to reform the Frankish Church, this was including educating the clergy, and encouraging them to live in communities based largely on the Benedictine Rule.
He established and restored the churches and monasteries. St Chrodegang introduced the Roman liturgy and Gregorian Chant to his understanding, from which they spread the other parts of Europe. St Chrodegang participated in several councils.
