Saint Dunstan of Canterbury Biography

Saint Dunstan of Canterbury was born in Baltonsborough, Glastonbury, England in 909. He was related to the royal family. Educated by monks. In the year 934 Dunstan became a Benedictine monk and was ordained bishop of Winchester by his uncle, St. Alphege. Hermit. In 943 he was recalled by King Edmund to the royal court, who appointed him Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey.

Dunstan turned the abbey into a great learning center. Later, he became advisor to King Edred on his accession to the throne when Edmund was assassinated and instituted a far-reaching reform of all monasteries in Edred’s empire.

When Edwy succeeded his uncle Edred as king in 955, he became Dunstan’s bitter enemy because the abbot sharply criticized his scandalous lifestyle. The king confiscated his property and banished him from his kingdom.

In 957 after Edwy was overthrown by his brother Edgar, he appointed Dunstan bishop of Worcester and London. 960 Archbishop of Canterbury, England.

Dunstan was appointed legate by Pope John XII, and with St. Ethelwold and St. Oswald, restored ecclesiastical discipline, and rebuilt many of the monasteries destroyed by the Danish invaders. His feast day is May 19th.
