Biography

Saint Erfyl, Sacred virgin who established the congregation of Llanerfyl, Montgomeryshire, Wales.

Records of the memorial day of the virgin Saint Erfyl first show up in Wales during the fifteenth century, recorded as 6 July. Her name may have changed after some time, as when recorded in the sixteenth century Llanstephan MS 47B manuscript,[1] her name shows up as Gwerfyl. In an original copy written in 1508, Additional MS 12.913, a “Urvul a Gwenvul” is recorded around the same time. Further comparative names have been credited to her throughout the years, including Eurfyl, Eurful, Erful, Urful, Urfyl and Yrfyl.

A congregation in Llanerfyl, Powys is committed to St. Erfyl, and should be her place of entombment. She has been ascribed as a little girl of Saint Padarn and a cousin of Saint Cadfan, however this is a misreading of a recorded stone, alluded to as her headstone, in the churchyard. The congregation holds a reliquary of Erfyl and the inside the grounds there are the remaining parts of a wooden shrine. A yew tree remains in the churchyard, which has had the storage compartment partitioned into four. Convention expresses that it developed from St. Erfyl’s staff.

A sacred very much committed to the holy person once in the past stood 400 feet (120 m) far from the congregation. The water was outstanding for its relieving capacity, and was recently utilized as baptismal water in the congregation. It turned into a custom for the offspring of the encompassing region to drink the water with sugar included Easter Mondays.
