St Gaudentius of Brescia Life History

St Gaudentius of Brescia studied under St Philastrius, who was Bishop of Brescia, Italy.

Gaudentius lived a pious life and preached with great oratory skills throughout Italy and in the East and due to this, he gained a lot of respect wherever he went.

When Philastrius, the Bishop of Brescia, died near the end of the 4th century AD, the people of Brescia chose Gaudentius as their bishop.

At this time, he was away on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, therefore he reluctantly accepted the position when he returned.

Gaudentius was consecrated by Saint Ambrose of Milan in 387 AD. As a Bishop, he wrote many pastoral letters, and some of his sermons still exist.

He left his Brescia in 405 AD to join a delegation sent by Pope Innocent I to Eastern Emperor Arcadius in Constantinople to defend St John Chrysostom from charges of heresy brought on him by a heretic.

The group was denied entry into Constantinople by Chrysostom‘s enemies and forced to return to Italy.

On their way back, their ship sank near Lampsacus, Greece, but they managed to arrive safely home.

However, St John Chrysostom sent a letter of gratitude to St Gaudentius although they had not achieved their mission.
