St. Huailu Zhang Biography
Saint Huailu Zhang, was one of the many Christian faithful killed for their faith during the Boxer Rebellion. Against his families wishes, he began taking classes at the local mission in 1900 at the age of 57. Since he could not read he had a hard time trying to recall prayers.
During the rebellion, some local criminals started an extortion scheme. They would charge a fee to not report Christians to the rebels. St. Huailu paid the fee, but the rebels still came to their village anyway and he was executed.
