Saint’s Biography
Saint Ibar of Meath was born in the early 400s in the northern province of Ulster in Ireland. His father Lugna belonged to Uí Eachach Ulad from Iveagh in Ulster and his mother was Bassar in the famous Oengus Culdeus. According to legend, Bassar was the mother of four saints.
The family had a respected position among the royal households of Ireland. some members were connected by kinship and marriage to the ruling chieftains of the country. (Ibar’s sister Mella married Hua-Carbmiac, King of Hy-Kensellagh).
St. Ibar of Meath Education
Ibar was a student of the pagan college and grew up when the bells of Druidism and the pagan superstition sounded all over Gaul. Under the influence of the preaching and the miracles of the great Saint Martin of Tours.
Ibar worked with Saint Kiaran, Saint Ailbe, Saint Declan and others to spread the gospel. Ibar settled at Begerin where he built an oratory and cell. He also established Beggery Monstary on the island of Beg-Eire and served as its abbot. ordained bishop Begerin, Wexford, Ireland and Spiritual director of Saint Brigid’s convent at Kildare, Ireland. Ibar ‘s teaching attracted students who traveled around the world to hear him.
Death
He died in 500 AD of natural causes in Ireland.
