Saint’s Biography
Saint Isidore of Chios was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He introduced Christianity to the Greek island of Chios. He was killed in the persecutions of Decius for refusing to sacrifice to idols.
The cult of Saint Isidore spread throughout the Mediterranean and became the patron saint of sailors. In 1125 his relics were brought to Venice by the doge Domenico Michael and re-discovered in the early 14th century and translated into a chapel in St. Mark’s Basilica.
The skull was discovered on Chios, wrapped in a reliquary of silver and jewels and translated in 1627 to Venice.
