Saint’s Biography
Saint Maria Mazzarello was the daughter of Giuseppe and Maddalena Mazzarello, the eldest of ten children of a farming family in the mountains. She was a member of the Religious Union of Mary Immaculate. Maria assisted in her community by teaching catechism to younger children and helping the sick. At the age of 23, she almost died of typhus.
She and her friend Petronilla started working as dressmakers. They discover that they have a common interest in working with children and started a school for girls. Every Sunday, they offered student or not, the opportunity to play games and prayers. Maria was co-founder of the daughters of the Maria Auxiliatrix. She was the first Salesian and served as a religious superior and founded houses in Italy and France.
