St Maurus of Cesena Life History
St. Maurus of Cesena, who was the nephew of Pope John IX, embarked on a path of religious service. He initially became a priest and later joined the Benedictine order as a monk at the Classe monastery in Ravenna, Italy.
Despite his duties, he sought solace and spiritual strength by retreating to a hilltop outside the city, where he dedicated time to preaching during the day.
In recognition of his piety and leadership qualities, Maurus eventually assumed the role of Abbot at the Classe monastery in 926 AD.
Later, in 934 AD, he was appointed as the Bishop of Cesena, Italy, where he faithfully served for approximately 12 years.
St. Maurus died on November 21, 946, in Cesena, Flaminia, Italy, due to natural causes. He was interred in a marble tomb in Monte Spaziano, Italy, next to a small cell where he often retreated for prayer and solitude.
Interestingly, his grave was lost for an extended period but was accidentally rediscovered in the 11th century.
His relics were then enshrined in the nearby Benedictine church and later rediscovered once more in 1470, at which point they were moved to the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. Some of his relics are also preserved in Ravenna, Italy.
Following his death, numerous miracles were attributed to his intercession. Notably, a blind woman from France, upon arriving at the church enclosing Maurus’ tomb, fervently vowed not to leave unless St. Maurus obtained the restoration of her sight.
She erected a small hut near the church and prayed continuously for eight days. In a remarkable turn of events, she was granted the restoration of her sight through his intercession.
