St Mawes Life History

St. Mawes was originally born in Wales. He lived as a hermit in a part of Cornwall, England, which now boasts a village named Saint Mawes (known as Lannvowsedh in Cornish) in his honor.

Later, he moved to Brittany, where he established a monastery on an island that is currently referred to as Maudez.

To construct this monastery, he had to clear the area of snakes and vermin. St. Mawes collaborated with Saint Budoc of Brittany and Saint Tudwal to establish this religious institution.

There is also a nearby village named Lanmodez, paying tribute to him, and over 60 churches in the region are dedicated to his name.

St. Mawes died in the 6th century AD. His relics were moved to Bourges, France, and later to Paris, France, in the 9th century to safeguard them from invading Normans. These relics were eventually returned to Brittany and distributed among nine different churches.

He is considered the patron saint against insects, snakes, and worms, and he is often depicted as a bishop and a schoolmaster.
