St Leonard of Noblac Life History
St Leonard of Noblac was also known as;
- Leonard de Noblet
- Leonard of Limoges
- Leonard of Limousin
- Leonardo Nobiliacum
- Leonardo, Leonhard, Lienard, Linhart, Léonard
St Leonard of Noblac was born into a noble family in France which was part of the court of the pagan King Clovis I.
St Remigius, Bishop of Reims was his mentor. He was given the privilege to visit prisons and set free anyone he wished.
Like a joke, the Queen suggested to Leonard that he invoke the help of his God to repel an invading army. After Leonard prayed, the Tide army of Clovis won the battle.
St Remigius, the Archbishop of Rheims used this miracle to convert Leonard, the King, and many others to Christianity.
Leonard began to live an austere life and preaching. His love for service to God led him to join the monastery in Orleans, France.
His brother, Saint Lifiard, followed his example and left the royal court, built a monastery at Meun, and lived there.
St Leonard of Noblac desired further seclusion, and so withdrew into the forest of Limousin, converting many on the way, and living on herbs, wild fruits, and spring water.
He built himself an oratory, leaving it only for journeys to churches. Others begged to live with him and learn from him, and so a monastery formed around his hermitage.
Leonard had great compassion for prisoners, obtaining release and converting many.
After St Leonard of Noblac’s death in 559 AD, churches were dedicated to him in France, England, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Bohemia, Poland, and other countries.
Pilgrims flocked to his tomb, and in one small town in Bavaria, there are records of 4,000 favors granted through Saint Leonard’s intercession.
