Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title ‘Our Lady of Help’ or ‘Our Lady of Succor’, began at the start of the 14th Century in the Church of Saint Augustine in Palermo, Sicily.

Fr. Nicola Bruno, who was a theologian, preacher and prior of the friary in Palermo, Sicily, suffered unbearable pains in his side.

He prayed for relief before the image of the Blessed Virgin in the Church of Saint Augustine. That same night, the Virgin of the same image appeared to him and told him he would be healed.

This event gave the painting its name ‘Our Lady of Help’ and led to the spread of devotion not only locally, but throughout the Order, especially in Italy, Spain, and Latin America.

This event has been celebrated in the Order since 1804 with its own liturgy.

The title “Our Lady of Help” is a reflection of the widespread belief among believers that Mary can intercede for those in need.

As a caring and attentive mother, Christians turn to her as the one whom Jesus himself referred to as “Behold your mother” in his final moments.

Mary is known by many titles, including Mary, Help of Christians, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, which show the trust that the faithful have in her as a helper of Christian people.

These titles reflect the belief that God chose Mary as the special instrument to bring the Savior, who is the ultimate help, into the world.
