Saint Peter Orseolo’s Life History
Peter Urseulus, Pietro I Orseolo or Peter Orseolo, was born in 928 AD in Udine, Venice, from one of Venice’s powerful families that descended from Teodato Ipato and Orso Ipato. He grew up exemplary to become the commander of the Venetian army when he was just 20 years old. He was known to be devoted to the catholic church
He was then appointed Doge of Venice in 976 AD and was instrumental in the restoration and maintenance of order in Venice as he built hospitals, took care of widows, orphans and pilgrims. Rumors once had it that he may have conspired in the murder of his predecessor but were unsubstantiated and could not be verified. He was seen to be generous to his predecessor’s widow.
He rebuilt a great part of the city, that had been ruined during the revolution, with his own funds and also reconstructed the Ducal Chapel, now known as St. Marks Basilica and the Doge’s Palace.
On September 1, 978 AD, he fled from Venice, leaving his wife Felicia Malipiero and children, with Abbot Guann and three other Venetians to join the Benedictine Abbey at Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa in Prades, which is now a Cistercian Abbey.
He lived a life full of great asceticism and years later he left the monastery to become a hermit in the surrounding forest for seven years until his death on January 10 987 AD. He was buried in the village church in Prades, France.
