St Pope Saint Stephen I Biography

Pope Saint Stephen I was born in Roman. He was the son of Jovius. little else known of his early life. He was the Archdeacon under Pope Lucius I. He was also elected 23rd pope in 254 AD.

He explicitly proclaimed the primacy of the diocese of Rome in matters of theology and the current understanding of Christ’s statement to SaintPeter. “You are Peter, and upon this rock, I will build My Church.” He condemned the Carthaginian practice of re-baptizing heretics, and accepted baptisms performed by heretics when the convert had acted in good faith; he corrected Saint Cyprian’s thinking on the matter.
