St Virgilius of Salzburg Life History
St Virgilius of Salzburg, also recognized as the Apostle of Carinthia, bore various names including Fergal, Fearghal, Ferghil, Vergil, Virgiel, and Virgil.
He was born in 700 AD in Ireland and led a life as a Benedictine monk. During a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 743 AD, he decided to settle in Bavaria on his way back. In Bavaria, he collaborated with Saint Rupert of Salzburg.
Saint Virgilius later became the Abbot of Saint Peter’s monastery in Salzburg, Austria, where one of his monks was Saint Modestus.
In 765 AD, he was ordained as the Bishop of Salzburg by Duke Odilo. On two occasions, Saint Boniface accused him of heresy due to his scientific beliefs, which included the idea of a round Earth.
However, these accusations were primarily rooted in tensions between Roman and Celtic traditions, and Virgilius was always acquitted of the charges.
He played a significant role in the reconstruction of the Salzburg cathedral and dispatched missionary priests to Carinthia, Austria.
Saint Virgilius died in 784 AD in Salzburg, Austria, and his relics are enshrined in the cathedral’s altar in Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on June 10, 1233.
Saint Virgilius is revered as the patron saint against birth complications and is also the patron of Salzburg, Austria, and the Slovenes.
In artistic representations, he is often depicted as a bishop holding a church, a bishop with a purse, or a bishop with a globe.
