August 12 2024: Bible Verse of the Day – Jesus Miracle of The Coin in the Fish’s Mouth – Matthew 17:22-27 – Monday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time

25 …Jesus asked him, “What is your opinion, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take tolls or census tax? From their subjects or from foreigners?”
27 But that we may not offend them, go to the sea, drop in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up, Open its mouth and you will find a coin worth twice the temple tax. Give that to them for me and for you.” – Matthew 17:22-27

Today’s Bible Verse of the Day Reflections

The Bible Verse today teaches us about sacrifice. Jesus tells us that we should sacrifice ourselves in order to prevent others from sinning or causing harm to others.

Jesus had the power not to pay taxes because He was God and the owner of everything on earth, but He did not use it against the authority.

He also did not have any money with Him or with the other disciples, depicting How financially strained they ‘might’ have always been.

Therefore Christ teaches us that money is just but a means to do God’s work and not the ultimate thing that you must have.

But there is this phrase in the reply that Jesus gave Peter that, “…But that we may not offend them…” Here, Jesus reaffirms His other statement that, “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” Being obedient to the local authority of your place is being rubber-stamped here by Jesus.

If deep down in your heart you know that you should pay the government tax but you really have no money to give, then Jesus tells us that God provides.

God will not let you suffer in the hands of man when you love, serve, and praise Him with undivided allegiance.

God tells us in the Bible that, “ask anything in my name and it shall be given to you.” The only condition to the fulfillment of this request is to always know, love, serve, praise, and glorify God all the days of your life.

Most people do not understand this miracle of the coin in the fish’s mouth by Jesus because they look at the coin from the earthly perspective, that is, they fail to understand that money and everything on earth is owned by God and He can redistribute it in any way He wills.

Just request God for anything you want to enable you to do His work and He will bring it to You using somebody or something else.

Let’s therefore always do the right thing like paying our dues to the authorities because, as long as we are serving and glorifying God, everything will be given to us by Him.

Let us not upset our debtors just because we fear asking God for His Providence. Let us sacrifice the little we have because God will repay us tenfold.

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to have faith in the providence of God every time we call on Him.

You have also taught us to avoid leading others into sin and temptation by our actions or lack of them. We pray that You always remind us to only have faith and hope in God and Him alone. Jesus, I love you. Amen.
