Catholic Mass Readings for Pentecost Sunday at the Vigil Mass 2023 – May 28 2023

1st Reading – Genesis 11:1-9

1 At first, the people of the whole world had only one language and used the same words.

2 As they wandered about in the East, they came to a plain in Babylonia and settled there.

3 They said to one another, “Come on! Let’s make bricks and bake them hard.” So they had bricks to build with and tar to hold them together.

4 They said, “Now let’s build a city with a tower that reaches the sky, so that we can make a name for ourselves and not be scattered all over the earth.”

5 Then the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which those men had built,

6 and he said, “Now then, these are all one people and they speak one language; this is just the beginning of what they are going to do. Soon they will be able to do anything they want!

7 Let us go down and mix up their language so that they will not understand one another.”

8 So the LORD scattered them all over the earth, and they stopped building the city.

9 The city was called Babylon, because there the LORD mixed up the language of all the people, and from there he scattered them all over the earth.

OR Exodus 19:3-8A, 16-20B

3 and Moses went up the mountain to meet with God. The LORD called to him from the mountain and told him to say to the Israelites, Jacob’s descendants:

4 “You saw what I, the LORD, did to the Egyptians and how I carried you as an eagle carries her young on her wings, and brought you here to me.

5 Now, if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own people. The whole earth is mine, but you will be my chosen people,

6 a people dedicated to me alone, and you will serve me as priests.”

7 So Moses went down and called the leaders of the people together and told them everything that the LORD had commanded him

8A the people all answered together, “Everything the LORD has said, we will do.”

16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, a thick cloud appeared on the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast was heard. All the people in the camp trembled with fear.

17 But Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stationed themselves at the foot of the mountain.

18 Mount Sinai was all wrapped in smoke, for the LORD came down upon it in fire. The smoke rose from it as though from a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently.

19 The trumpet blast grew louder and louder, while Moses was speaking, and God answering him with thunder.

20 When the LORD came down to the top of Mount Sinai, he summoned Moses to the top of the mountain.

OR Ezekiel 37:1-14

1 The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he led me out in the spirit of the LORD and set me in the center of the plain, which was now filled with bones.

2 He made me walk among the bones in every direction so that I saw how many they were on the surface of the plain. How dry they were!

3 He asked me: Son of man, can these bones come to life? I answered, “Lord GOD, you alone know that.”

4 Then he said to me: Prophesy over these bones, and say to them: Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD!

5 Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: See! I will bring spirit into you, that you may come to life.

6 I will put sinews upon you, make flesh grow over you, cover you with skin, and put spirit in you so that you may come to life and know that I am the LORD.

7 I, Ezekiel, prophesied as I had been told, and even as I was prophesying I heard a noise; it was a rattling as the bones came together, bone joining bone.

8 I saw the sinews and the flesh come upon them, and the skin cover them, but there was no spirit in them.

9 Then the LORD said to me: Prophesy to the spirit, prophesy, son of man, and say to the spirit: Thus says the Lord GOD: From the four winds come, O spirit, and breathe into these slain that they may come to life.

10 I prophesied as he told me, and the spirit came into them; they came alive and stood upright, a vast army.

11 Then he said to me: Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They have been saying, “Our bones are dried up,
our hope is lost, and we are cut off.”

12 Therefore, prophesy and say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD: O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them, and bring you back to the land of Israel.

13 Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and have you rise from them, O my people!

14 I will put my spirit in you that you may live, and I will settle you upon your land; thus you shall know that I am the LORD. I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD.

OR Joel 3:1-5

1 The LORD says, I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions;

2 even upon the servants and the handmaids, in those days, I will pour out my spirit.

3 And I will work wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood, fire, and columns of smoke;

4 the sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, at the coming of the day of the LORD, the great and terrible day.

5 Then everyone shall be rescued who calls on the name of the LORD; for on Mount Zion there shall be a remnant, as the LORD has said, and in Jerusalem survivors whom the LORD shall call.

Responsorial Psalm – Psalms 104:1-2, 24 AND 35, 27-28, 29-30

R. (cf. 30) Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
or:
R. Alleluia.

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD, my God, you are great indeed!
2 You are clothed with majesty and glory,
robed in light as with a cloak.
R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
or:
R. Alleluia.

24 How manifold are your works, O LORD!
In wisdom you have wrought them all
the earth is full of your creatures;
35C bless the LORD, O my soul! Alleluia.
R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
or:
R. Alleluia.

27 Creatures all look to you
to give them food in due time.
28 When you give it to them, they gather it;
when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
or:
R. Alleluia.

29 If you take away their breath, they perish
and return to their dust.
30 When you send forth your spirit, they are created,
and you renew the face of the earth.
R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
or:
R. Alleluia.

2nd Reading – Romans 8:22-27

Brothers and sisters:
22 For we know that up to the present time all of creation groans with pain, like the pain of childbirth.

23 But it is not just creation alone which groans; we who have the Spirit as the first of God’s gifts also groan within ourselves, as we wait for God to make us his children and set our whole being free.

24 For it was by hope that we were saved; but if we see what we hope for, then it is not really hope. For which of us hopes for something we see?

25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

26 In the same way the Spirit also comes to help us, weak as we are. For we do not know how we ought to pray; the Spirit himself pleads with God for us in groans that words cannot express.

27 And God, who sees into our hearts, knows what the thought of the Spirit is; because the Spirit pleads with God on behalf of his people and in accordance with his will.

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel – John 7:37-39

37 On the last and most important day of the festival Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice, “Whoever is thirsty should come to me, and

38 whoever believes in me should drink. As the scripture says, ‘Streams of life-giving water will pour out from his side.’ “

39 Jesus said this about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were going to receive. At that time the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not been raised to glory.
