Saint Juan de Ribera’s Life History
Juan was born in Seville, Spain, on March 20 1532, from Pedro Afan de Ribera, Viceroy of Naples and his mother , whose name is unknown who passed away while he was still very young.
He studied at Salamanca, got ordained as a priest and was appointed bishop of Badajoc in 1562. He instructed on catechism to Catholics and on December 3 1568, he was appointed archbishop of Valencia. He was then made viceroy of Valencia in 1602. During this time, having been in charge civilly and spiritually, he established the Museum of Patriarch which is the college of St. John.
Juan had great resentment towards the Moriscos who were Muslims converted to Christianity under threats of exile. This issue, after his death, raised doubts as to why he is even considered to be canonized as a saint. He had despised them as traitors and had even suggested crude methods to deal with them that were rejected by the authority above him at the time. He had proposed enslaving them at one point. It was due to him that there was the formation of the decree to exile and expel the Moriscos in 1609. It was later considered, by those that supported the move to canonize him, that the moriscos were deemed nonconvertible and so they succeeded in canonizing him as saint.
He died on January 6 1611, aged 78, in Valencia, Spain.
