Today’s reading reiterates Jesus’ role as the Messiah and his teachings about inclusivity and rejection by one’s own people. It also highlights the potential for anger and violence when people reject a priest’s, pastor’s, or preacher’s message.
The Bible Verse of today is derived from Luke 4:16-30, Matthew 13:54-58, Mark 6:1-6.
Welcome.
Today’s Teaching About Jesus as the Messiah, Inclusivity and Rejection of Preachers by Peers
Fulfillment of Prophecy
Jesus proclaims that the prophecy of Isaiah regarding the Messiah has been fulfilled in him. He reminds the people that the Messiah is meant to bring good news to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, and set the captives free, a vocation that he was already doing in their midst.
Rejection By the Hometown
Jesus points out that prophets are often rejected in their hometowns. He cites examples from the scroll, where prophets were not received well by their own people.
We as the prophets of today should be aware that our Gospel message may be rejected especially by those who know us very well and are prejudiced by the history they have of us.
Gentile Inclusion
Jesus uses the examples of the prophets Elijah and Elisha to emphasize that God’s mercy extends to all people, including Gentiles.
This was a radical teaching for the time, as Jews were not typically inclusive of Gentiles. The Jews regarded non-Jews as unclean and Godforsaken.
Currently, we should not discriminate against anybody in our journey of evangelization, regardless of their color, race, culture, geographical location, or spoken language.
Anger and Violence
The people of Nazareth become angry with Jesus’ teachings and attempt to throw him off a cliff. Jesus, however, is able to escape from their grasp.
At this day and age, there are many forces that are fighting against Christianity and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and anger and violence are usually the common weapons being used. So we should be aware of such eventualities as we continue proclaiming the Gospel.
Ultimately, this passage emphasizes Jesus’ role as the Messiah and his teachings about inclusivity and rejection by one’s own people. It also highlights the potential for anger and violence when people reject a prophet’s message.
Short Story About the Importance of Accepting Jesus as the Messiah as Preached to Us By our Friends
Once upon a time, in a small agricultural town, there was a man named Thomas who belonged to a different tribe from the majority of the people in the town.
Despite being seen as a foreigner, Thomas was a kind and gentle man who had a deep faith in God. He had a passion for spreading the word of God and eventually became a priest.
However, Thomas’s position as a priest did not earn him the respect and attention of the people in his community.
They viewed him with suspicion and did not trust his teachings because he was a man they knew his family history very well. Despite his best efforts, Thomas found it difficult to make any headway with his ministry.
Despite the challenges, Thomas continued to preach and spread the Gospel. One day, he received news that he was being transferred to another town, several miles away.
The people in the new town were open and receptive to Thomas’s teachings, and they welcomed him with open arms.
Thomas’s ministry in the new town was a great success. People repented and accepted the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and they were blessed with abundant resources by God.
The residents were filled with gratitude towards Thomas for bringing them the word of God and showing them the path to salvation.
Meanwhile, the town that had rejected Thomas was struck by a terrible drought and famine. The people suffered greatly, and many of them regretted their decision to reject Thomas and his teachings. They realized that they had missed out on an opportunity to learn and grow in their faith.
In the end, Thomas’s ministry had a profound impact on the lives of many people. Despite facing rejection and adversity, he remained steadfast in his commitment to spreading the word of God.
His faithfulness was rewarded, and he was able to bring the light of God’s love to those who were willing to receive it.
