Blessed Anna Rosa Gattorno was born in Genoa, October 14, 1831, from a family of wealthy. She was baptized the same day, in the parish of S. Donato, with the names of Rosa Maria Benedetta and confirmed at age 12. Rose Maria Benedetta was home school and was familiar with the politics and anti-clerical arguments of her day.

At 21 (November 5, 1852), she married Gerolamo Custo and moved to Marseille. An unexpected financial collapse soon troubled the happiness of the new family, forced to return to Genoa in the sign of poverty. The couple was blessed with three children.

Rose’s firstborn daughter Carlotta was struck by a sudden illness, remained deaf and dumb forever; Gerolamo’s attempt to make a fortune abroad ended with his death on March 9, 1858, who left her a widow less than six years after the wedding and, after a few months later the loss of the youngest son.

On 8 December 1858 Rose Maria took her vows as a member of the Franciscan third order. She dedicated herself to the poor. Though she preferred totally solitude, Catholic associations in Genoa began soliciting her help.
