Blessed’s Biography
Blessed Anna Rosa Gattorno was born in Genoa, October 14, 1831, from a family of wealthy. She was baptized the same day, in the parish of S. Donato, with the names of Rosa Maria Benedetta and confirmed at age 12. Rose Maria Benedetta was home school and was familiar with the politics and anti-clerical arguments of her day.
At 21 (November 5, 1852), she married Gerolamo Custo and moved to Marseille. An unexpected financial collapse soon troubled the happiness of the new family, forced to return to Genoa in the sign of poverty. The couple was blessed with three children.
Rose’s firstborn daughter Carlotta was struck by a sudden illness, remained deaf and dumb forever; Gerolamo’s attempt to make a fortune abroad ended with his death on March 9, 1858, who left her a widow less than six years after the wedding and, after a few months later the loss of the youngest son.
On 8 December 1858 Rose Maria took her vows as a member of the Franciscan third order. She dedicated herself to the poor. Though she preferred totally solitude, Catholic associations in Genoa began soliciting her help.
Achievements
Rose Maria Benedetta founded the Daughters of Saint Anne on 8 December 1866 in Piacenza. She worked with bishop Giovanni Battista Scalabrini in helping the deaf. During her leadership had managed to established 368 houses in Italy, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Eritrea. The organization also built hostels, schools, and kindergartens had 3,500 sisters and worked in a ministry to the deaf and mute.
The institute today is associated with the Movement of Hope, the Contemplative Order of the Daughters of Saint Anne, and the Sons of Saint Anne.
