Blessed Bonannus of Roio Life History

The Blessed Bonannus was also known as Bonann was born in the late 12th century in Roio Poggio in the province of L’Aquila, Abruzzo region of southern Italy. This dating is derived from the fact that he was attributed to the founding of the Benedictine monastery of St. Laurentius in Roio in 1220.

In this monastery, he and the other monks later became members of the congregation celestines who became founded by and named after the Holy Pope Celestin V (Peter of Morone) (1209-1296) who is claimed to have sat on Peter’s chair for six months in 1294.

According to tradition, Bonannus lived as a hermit in a cave at the bottom of a canyon and hen he died in the 13th century, his body was buried in the monastery of St. Laurentius.

The people declared him blessed and when the monastery was closed down in 1610, his relics were transferred to the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio in L’Aquila(Southern Italy).
