Blessed’s Biography
Blessed Caterina was born on September 28, 1801, in Italy. In 1808, her mother died and her father abandoned her and her sister Giuditta, who was born in 1803. The sisters were accepted and grew up at the orphanage of the Conventino of Bergamo. There Catherine lived a Christian life and had a strong devotion to the Virgin Mary and Saint Jerome Emiliani.
Education and Work
She studied to be a teacher and after graduating as a primary school teacher; she left Conventino in 1823 with her sister. The two lived with their two cousins, Giovanni, and Antonio Cittadini, who were priests. In 1824 Catherine got a job as a teacher in the public school for girls in Somasca.
In 1826, Katarina and Giuditta moved permanently to Somasca, where they rented a house. That same year in October they bought a building, fully equipped and furnished. They opened a boarding school for girls.
She taught religion, managed the school, and built a small chapel for her girls. Word of her success spread, attracting more students. In 1836 the sisters established another “Cittadini” private school and another in 1836.
Her sister directed the new school until she died in 1840. A year later Father Antonio Cittadini died (cousin) which left Katarina devastated and in poor health.
