Blessed’s Biography
Blessed Ivan Merz Blessed Ivan Merz was educated in Banja Luka, briefly in a military academy, and in Vienna, Austria. He fought in the Italian front of the First World War. After the war, Ivan studied again in Vienna, in Paris, in France, and taught French language and literature at the University of Zagreb, from which he received his doctorate in philosophy.
Although he remained a layman in the world, Ivan took a vow of celibacy and dedicated his free time to the Church. He taught young Croats and spoke and wrote to evangelize all Croats. Ivan worked for the liturgical revival and contributed to the establishment of Catholic Action in Croatia.
Death
He died on May 10, 1928, in Zagreb, Croatia of natural causes. His relics were transferred to the Shrine of the Holy Heart in Zagreb on December 16, 1977.
