Blessed Jean-Baptiste-Xavier Loir, also called Jacques-Louis of Besançon, was a Catholic priest, born in March 11 1720 in Besançon, Doubs, France and died as a martyr on May 19 1794 at the age of 74 years aboard the prison ship Deux-Associés, in Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, France. We celebrate his feast day on May 19 every year in the Catholic Church.

Blessed’s Biography

Blessed Jean-Baptiste-Xavier Loir was the son of Jacques-Louis Loir and Elizabeth Juliot, the 6th of their 8th children.

He studied in Lyon, France and joined the Franciscan Capuchin friars in 1740, making his profession on 9 May 1741 in Lyon. Later Jean became a priest of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin.

He was imprisoned on a ship in France and left to die during the anti–Catholic persecutions of the French Revolution.
