Blessed Maria Domenica Mantovani Biography

Maria Domenica Mantovani was the eldest in a family of four. She was born to Giovanni and Prudenza Zamperini.

Maria grew up in a very small village where she only received three years of elementary level education. She learned the religion from her religious parents and gradually had an early induction to Christianity. In her teenage life, her parish priest and spiritual director encouraged her to visit the sick, teach catechism and become an active member of the church.

On December 8, 1886, she made a vow of virginity and asked for guidance on how best to achieve her religious vocations. Later, Maria and Father Nascimbeni started the Congregation of the Little sisters of the Holy Family in 1892 with other four women. Maria assumed the name Mother Maria of the Immaculate but everyone just called her mother. The mission of the foundation was to promote parish life and help promote both spiritual and material wellbeing of needy people. She served as the first superior for 40 years.

Today, the Little Sisters of the Holy Family work in several nations such as Italy, Switzerland, Albania, Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The mission remains serving Children, youth, elderly and the disabled in the Parishes.
