Blessed Maria Teresa Fasce’s Life History
Maria Fasce, middle name being Giovanna, was born on December 27 1881 AD, in Torriglia, Genoa, Kingdom of Italy in a family of eight children, from Eugenio Fasce and Teresa Valente, with Luigia as their eldest sister.
To her family, she was referred to as “Marietta”. Luigia assumed the responsibility of taking care of her alongside her siblings, when their mother died in 1889 AD.
She grew up understanding the Charism of St. Augustine as she was known to teach catechism to children. Her confessor, Father Mariano Feriello, encouraged her to adopt the figures of St. Augustine. Her dreams came fully alive when she witnessed the canonization of St. Rita of Cascia during her travels to Rome in 1900 AD. She had earlier come across the story of St. Rita’s life and she had become her personal role model. The canonization celebrations fueled her desire to become a nun, which greatly angered her family.
Despite the negativity, she applied for an admission at a Ligurian convent but was rejected the first time around. Fortunately, her second time application, went through and was admitted on June 22 1906, to the Order of St. Augustine.
She received her habit on December 25 1906 and professed her vows, taking the name, “Maria Teresa”, on December 25 1907. She left the convent three years later, as a result of a generational crisis brought about by novices not living up to the set standards of religious convents. Due to this, she took some time off fro reflection and came back in 1911, making her solemn vows the following year on March 22 1912.
Maria alerted her superior on the declining standards of novices she had witnessed earlier and in light of this, was made novice mistress on July 17 1914. She was then vicar of her convent from 1917 t0 1920, when she was unanimously elected abbess of her monastery on August 12 that same year.
She initiated a newsletter in 1923, aimed at promoting the chapel that housed Saint Rita, her role model’s remains and desired to bring people to God through her.
Maria Fasce developed a malignant tumor on her right breast and suffered diabetes, asthma and circulatory problems that brought her walking difficulties. Even though she was severely ill, she endured her suffering with patience and was able to establish a girl’s orphanage whose construction lasted 13 years due to hard economic times brought about by the onslaught of World War II.
Having fulfilled her goal, she died on January 18 1947 and her remains were placed next to St Rita of Cascia.
