Blessed Maria Teresa of Jesus Life History

Blessed Maria Teresa of Jesus, originally named Maria Scrilli, was born on May 15, 1825, in Montevarchi, Arezzo, Italy.

During her youth, she suffered from an unidentified illness that left her confined to her bed for two years. Her recovery came after a vision of Saint Fiorenzo, which prompted her to sense a calling to religious life.

On May 28, 1846, Maria entered the monastery of Saint Mary Magdalene de’ Pazzi in Florence, Italy.

While she initially found contentment in the cloistered life, she soon realized it wasn’t her true vocation and departed after just two months. Embracing the Carmelite tertiary tradition, she adopted the name Maria Teresa of Jesus.

Returning to her hometown, Maria Teresa began teaching secular and religious subjects to local girls and initiated a small school for them.

While searching for a location to establish a formal school, she was asked by a town council to take charge of a local school. Maria Teresa accepted the offer, which became the foundation for her religious institute.

On October 15, 1854, she founded the Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. However, on November 30, 1859, during a period of anti-clerical sentiment in Italy, her institute faced an order for dissolution, and the school was secularized.

It took many years of perseverance and patience, but on March 18, 1878, Mother Maria succeeded in reestablishing her community, this time in Florence, Italy.

Here, they operated a school, a boarding house, and a Marian association while dedicating themselves to teaching, parish work, and visiting the sick.

Today, the Institute has approximately 250 sisters spread across Italy, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Israel, Poland, Canada, the Philippines, the United States, and the Czech Republic. They continue their mission of teaching, catechizing, and caring for the sick and elderly.

Blessed Maria Teresa of Jesus died on November 14, 1889, in Florence, Italy. She was beatified on October 8, 2006, by Pope Benedict XVI in a beatification ceremony presided over by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins at the Roman Amphitheater in Fiesole, Italy.

She is now revered as the patron of educators and the Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
