Blessed Pope Blessed Gregory X’s Life History

Tiobaldo Visconti, famously known as Pope Gregory X, was born in 1210 AD, in Piacenza, Holy Roman Empire, from the Visconti family. Not much of his early childhood is known but whereabouts of his life are known from when he was attached to the household of a Cistercian Cardinal of Palestrina, Giacomo di Pecorari, who was his mentor.

He became Majordomo to the Cardinal and was always in his presence, probably how he got acquainted to important French Clergy and Laity. He was canon of the Basilica of S. Antonio in Piacenza.

He traveled to France on an assignment, which was to preach a crusade against Frederick II, the Hohenstaufen Emperor, who was at war with Pope Gregory IX. In 1240 AD, he was made of canon of the Cathedral of Lyons at the request of their canons when a vacancy occurred in their numbers, after a request was made to Cardinal Giacomo.

Tiobaldo once declined an offer to become bishop of Piacenza, made to him by Pope Innocent IV, so that he could follow in his mentors footsteps, who later died on June 25 1244 AD.

Upon his patron’s death, he planned to travel to Paris where he would study theology but on arriving in Lyons, he was received by Archbishop elect, Philippe and was asked to be magister of the household. He finally accepted the position since he had earlier declined the offer.

Pope Innocent IV was once asked to flee from Rome by Frederick II Augustus in July 1244 and headed to Lyons where he planned to create an ecumenical council. Teobaldo helped plan the Ecumenical Council which met at Lyons in June and July 1245 and got acquainted with people such as Bonaventure. Thomas Aquinas, Gui Foucois and Marteo Rubeo Orsini.

He became the archdeacon of Heinault in the diocese of Liege on September 9 1246 AD and was instructed by Pope Innocent IV to preach the crusade for the recovery of the Holy Land.

He later left Liege for Paris in 1267 after being sent to England to assist Cardinal Ottobono Fieschi, who had been appointed Papal Legate in England, to support King Henry III in the rebellion of the barons.

Teobaldo was elected Pope on Septemver 1 1272 after the position had been vacant for two years and nine months, due to the divisions among the cardinals. He was elected as a surprise, while he was in the Ninth Crusade in Palestine with King Edward I of England. He was summoned to Viterbo, where the papal elections had been conducted and accepted his papacy in early February 1272 taking the name Gregory X. Since he had not recieved his holy orders, he was ordained as a priest on March 13 1272 and was made bishop and crowned on March 27 1272 at St. Peter’s Basilica.

In his reign as Pope, he was inclined on maintaining the discipline of the church, rather than leaning on the religious side. He worked towards the restoration of peace between Christian nations and pronces, the settlement of affairs in the German Empire, the ammendment of the mode of life among the clergy and the people, the union of the Greek Church with Rome and the deliverance of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. He is acknowledged for effecting unimpared peace and harmony in his time as Pope.

He made substantial reforms to the constitution of the church in terms of changes in the conduct of the papal elections, standards held to this date.

During his pontificate, he canonized France Vusatta on September 1273, a Cistercian nun at Piacenza. he beatified Luchesius Modestini in 1274 and had commenced the cause of canonization of King Loius IX of France in 1272.

Pope Gregory X developed an illness and was suffering from a hernia. Om his way back to Rome from a council in Lyons, he was forced to stop at Arezzo during Christmas in 1275, where he stayed there succumbing to his illness on January 10 1276. He is buried in the Cathedral Church of Arezzo.
