Blessed Teresa Grillo Michel’s Life History

Teresa Grillo was born on September 25 1855 AD, in Alessandria, Kingdom of Sardinia, as the last born in a family of five children, from Giuseppe Grillo and Maria Antoinette Parvopassau. She was baptized on the following day as Maddalena.

She received her Confirmation on October 1 1867 from Bishop Giacomo Antonio and her first communion in 1872. She received her education from a school in Turin and a boarding school in Lodi, from 1867 to 1873, managed by the Ladies of Loretto.

After her graduation, she got married to Captain Giovani Battista Michel on August 2 1877 and the couple moved around cities hoping to settle but her husband died in Naples, a city they had finally chosen to settle in, in a parade on June 13 1891, due to sunstroke. Her husband’s death plunged her into a deep depression. Her cousin priest Prelli guided her through her grieving period and at the end of it all, got converted after reading into the life of Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolenge. She then decided to dedicate her life in service of the poor.

At first, she used her home to shelter poor citizens but sold it after it grew small for the increasing number of people coming in for help. She bought an old building, remodeled it and renamed it as the Little Sisters of Divine Providence. As time went by, some women became attracted to her initiative and joined in, therefore forming the basis of a religious congregation that she later founded on January 8 1899 AD, with the permission of Giuseppe Capecci of Alessandria.

She later joined the Third order of Saint Francis on January 14 1893 and donated her wedding garment to the Capuchin Church to be used as a sacred vestment. She and isx other sisters founded a kindergarten and a sewing workshop in La Spezia in 1902 AD.

She had earlier made her profession as a Franciscan Third Order member on January 23 1894, in Brazil on October 6 1901 and full profession in Alessandria on November 3 1905 AD.

Her religious order had spread outside Italy, reaching till Brazil, Argentina and Latin America. Grillo’s religious order received a decree of praise from Pope Pius XII. She was earlier made her Order’s Superior General on June 10 1936 AD.

After living dedicated to the service of the less fortunate in the society, Grillo died on January 25 1944, aged 88, in Alessandria, Italy, in her mother-house.
