Blessed’s Biography
Blessed Vasile Aftenie was born on June 14, 1899, in Romania, and was the son of Petru and Agafia. Vasile attended primary school in his native village and high school courses at Blaj. In 1917, he was drafted by the army and fought in Galicia and Italy. After the war ended Vasile enrolled at Blaj Academy of Theology in 1919. He later studied at the Greek College of Sant’Atanasio in Rome. In 1925, Vasile got his doctorate in philosophy and theology and returned to his homeland. On 1 January 1926, he received priestly ordination to Blaj, from Metropolitan Vasile Suciu.
On October 1, 1939, he became rector of the Blaj Academy of Theology. In April 1940 he was appointed a titular bishop of Ulpiana. Vasile returned as vicar for Bucharest and the Old Kingdom, which is the territory of the first Romanian national state.
Arrest, torture, and death
He was arrested on October 28, 1948, in the Communist persecutions, and imprisoned first in the Dragoslavele work camp. On 25 May 1949, Vasile was separated from others and kept in isolation in the basement of the Ministry of the Interior in Bucharest, where he suffered torture for ten months. Because of physical and psychological violence, on March 25, 1950, Vasile suffered a stroke. He was taken to the hospital in the Vacaresti prison, where he died on 10 May 1950, forty-five days later.
