Parish Short History
Before the construction of Sacred Heart, Immaculate construction church in downtown Fairbanks served as the city’s cathedral. The ground was broken for Sacred Heart Cathedral in 1962 on a large tract of land at the intersection of the airport and Peger Roads.
The Rev. James Spils served as the construction superintendent. The project proceeded slowly and work was done as money became available. The first Mass was celebrated on Palm Sunday, April 3, 1966, and the cathedral was consecrated by Bishop.
It is the mother church of the diocese of fairbanks and is the seat of the bishop of the diocese
