Parish Short History
In the early 1940’s, Fr. Vincent Warren of the Society of St. Joseph, a pastor serving in Maysville, recognized a need for Catholic outreach among African-Americans in Baldwin County.
At the time, the African-American community was made up mostly of workers from the turpentine camps, farmers and fishermen scattered across the rural area.
The Diocese of Mobile purchased 10 acres in Daphne for the mission, which would be run by the Josephites.
The Shrine was dedicated on Oct. 16, 1948.
The Josephites returned the administration of the Shrine, as well as St. Joseph in Maysville, to the Archdiocese of Mobile in 1991.
In its 41 years under the leadership of the Josephites, the Shrine recorded 673 baptisms, including 305 converts to Catholicism.
