He was educated at Corpus Christi College and Oxford University. Later he married and served as a layman and schoolmaster. When he became a widower, he went to Rheims, France for studies where he was later ordained in 1580. He then returned to England to evangelize to convert Catholics in Somerset.
James was arrested for his faith and was convicted of treason when he showed loyalty to Rome and declined to take the oath of Supremacy
