Biography
Saint Bernward of Hildesheim, Member of a Saxon noble family. Grandson of Athelbero, Count Palatine of Saxony. Orphaned at a young age. Educated by his uncle Volkmar, Bishop of Utrecht, and taught at the Cathedral School in Heidelberg, where he was a classmate of Bl. Meinwerk of Paderborn and in Mainz. Ordained in Mainz. Imperial chaplain and tutor of the future emperor Otto III. From 987. Bishop of Hildesheim, Germany from 993 to 1020. Art sponsorship; commissioned religious painting and sculpture, renovated existing buildings and built in an architectural and ornamental ironworks. In 1020 he retired to a Benedictine monastery to spend his days in prayer.
