St. Meletius of Antioch Biography
St. Meletius of Antioch was born to a wealthy family. He was the Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia in 358 AD following the toppling of an Arian Bishop. However, the Arian priests demonstrated and forced Him to exile. He was then chosen the Bishop of Antioch in Syria after the city bishop had relocated to Constantinople.
The Arians in the diocese demonstrated and Melitius was exiled three times making returns in 362, 367 and 378. He was supported by Saint Basil of Caesarea while he was in exile. In 379 AD, he called a council at Antioch to formally introduce orthodox Nicene Christianity as a proper institution of faith.
He baptized and ordained Saint John Chrysostom and was consecrated Saint Gregory of Nazianus as a bishop in Constantinople in 381 AD.
