Chrism Mass Readings on Holy Thursday – March 28 2024

1st Reading – Isaiah 61:1-3A, 6A, 8B-9

1  The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to preach to the meek, to heal the contrite of heart, and to preach a release to the captives and deliverance to them that are shut up:

2  To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God: to comfort all that mourn:

3A  To appoint to the mourners of Zion: and to give them a crown for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, a garment of praise for the spirit of grief.

6A  But you shall be called the priests of the Lord: to you it shall be said: Ye ministers of our God.

8B  I will make their work in truth; and I will make a perpetual covenant with them.

9  And they shall know their seed among the Gentiles and their offspring among peoples. All that shall see them shall know them, that these are the seed which the Lord has blessed.

Responsorial Psalm – Psalms 89:21-22, 25 AND 27

R. (2) For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

21  I have found David my servant:
with my holy oil I have anointed him.
22  For my hand shall help him:
and my arm shall strengthen him.
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

25  And my truth and my mercy shall be with him:
and in my name shall his horn be exalted.
27  He shall cry out to me: You are my father:
my God, and the support of my salvation.
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

2nd Reading – Revelation 1:5-8

5  [Grace to you and peace] from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth, who has loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

6  And has made us a kingdom, and priests to God and his Father, to him be glory and empire forever and ever. Amen.

7  Behold, he comes with the clouds, and every eye shall see him, and they also that pierced him. And all the tribes of the earth shall bewail themselves because of him. Even so. Amen.

8  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, says the Lord God, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.

Verse Before The Gospel – Isaiah 61:1 (CITED IN Luke 4:18)

18  The Spirit of the LORD is upon me;
for he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor.

Gospel – Luke 4:16-21

16  Jesus came to Nazareth, where he was brought up: and he went into the synagogue, according to his custom, on the sabbath day; and he rose up to read.

17  And the book of Isaiah the prophet was delivered unto him. And as he unfolded the book, he found the place where it was written:

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he has sent me to heal the contrite of heart, to preach deliverance to the captives, and sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19  to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of reward.

20  And when he had folded the book, he restored it to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

21  He said to them, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”
