“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence.
Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.” – Matthew 23:23-26, Luke 11:37-41

Today’s Bible Verse of the Day Reflections

Today, Jesus vents out His anger on the Scribes and the Pharisees due to their constant holier-than-thou display of their character and actions.

They often showed themselves off as the holiest and devoid of any sin in front of fellow men and in the public limelight but under the cover of darkness, they did the worst forms of plunder and indulgencies. Their hearts lacked love for the poor, widows, beggars and the lepers.

But Jesus comes along and tells them that God is not interested in how good they look in front of men, but how good they look in front of Him.

The Scribes and the Pharisees were concerned mostly with keeping and following to the letter the Mosaic Law. They cared less about love for one another.

The greatest commandment that Jesus tells us is to love the Lord our God with all our hearts, soul, and mind and to also love our neighbours as ourselves.

Anything we do that does not embrace the above commandment is just vanity. That act does not please God. That is why Jesus was so mad with the Scribes and the Pharisees because all that they did and what they preached did not embrace the commandment of love.

Jesus wanted the Scribes and the Pharisees to first and foremost stop sin, then embrace the love for God and for neighbour then start practicing with love, what they preach.

We, therefore, are also being called today, just like the Scribes and the Pharisees, to stop being hypocrites, who show off how clean we are from the outside while the inside of our hearts is full of sin and all manner of evils.

Let us embrace the commandment of love and every action we do will reflect the will of God.

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, we acknowledge that we are sinners and that we sometimes tend to display hypocrisy. Forgive us our sins and continue showering us with Your abundant Graces so that we do not forget to love the Lord our God and also our neighbours in all our actions and utterances. Jesus, I love you. Amen.
