Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina died in Rome on February 2 1594 from pleurisy. He was an Italian Renaissance composer born around 1525 in Palestrina, near Rome.
As a choirboy, he sang in Rome and worked as an organist. He composed more than 105 masses, 250 motets, and other works.
When he was buried, a lead plate was placed on his simple coffin and it was written, “Libera me Domine”. New construction covered his tomb, and attempts to find his grave have been unsuccessful.
