February 5 1597: The Martyrdom of the 26 Martyrs of Japan

On February 5, 1597, 26 Catholics were crucified at Tateyama (Hill of Wheat), Nagasaki, Japan by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Their feast day on February 6 is also known as St Paul Miki and Companions, martyrs.

These 26 martyrs were crucified to death during a time when Christianity was suppressed in Japan. This resulted from political difficulties between Portugal and Spain, competition between missionary groups, and factions within the Japanese government.

By 1630, Catholicism had been almost suppressed in Japan.
