January 30 435 AD:

Rome recognized the Vandal territories in Northwest Africa as “federati,” to avert their invasion of Italy and consequently, that invasion was successfully averted for 20 years.

The term “federati” was used to describe barbarians who were allied with Rome but held power.

The Romans used treaties, or foedera, to raise frontier troops or federati.

The barbarians who were federati seized more and more power, eventually demanding a third of Italy’s land.

The Romans’ military reputation had declined, and barbarians were increasingly entering Italy.
