Blessed Nicholas Giustiniani Life History

Blessed Nicholas Giustiniani, who was born in Venice, Italy, during the early 12th century to a noble Venetian family, initially embarked on a life as a Benedictine monk at the San Niccolò del Lido monastery in Venice in 1153.

However, in 1172, a tragic turn of events saw all of his brothers lose their lives in a battle outside Constantinople.

Following this devastating loss, Nicholas sought and obtained permission from Pope Alexander III to leave his monastic life and reenter the secular world.

He married Anne Michieli, the daughter of a Venetian doge, and together they had nine children. It was only in 1179 that Anne consented to Nicholas’s return to his religious calling.

He subsequently spent the remainder of his years at the San Niccolò del Lido monastery.

A few years later, Anne herself decided to embrace the religious life and became a nun at the convent of Saint Blaise near Venice.

Nicholas Giustiniani died around 1180, succumbing to natural causes. Although there is no formal beatification for him, he is held in high local esteem and veneration.
