Our Lady of Caravaggio History
The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Giannetta de’ Vacchi Varoli who was cutting hay in a field and requested the people of Caravaggio to build a chapel and also penance from them.
Afterwards, a new spring of healing water appeared in the hay field. From then, on the anniversary of the apparition, many people make a pilgrimage to the Santa Maria del Fonte shrine which was built at the site.
Thereafter, devotion to the Madonna of Caravaggio spread rapidly throughout the region and eventually around the world.
