Saint Acca of Hexham Biography
Saint Acca of Hexham experienced childhood in the family unit of Saint Bosa of York, and turned into his otherworldly understudy, assistant, and voyaging buddy. Benedictine priest. Dear companion of and clergyman to Saint Wilfrid, and went with him on excursions to the mainland. Companion of the Venerable Bede, who devoted a portion of his works to Acca. Abbot of Saint Andrews at Hexham, England in 709, designated by Saint Wilfrid just before that sacred man passed on. Religious administrator of Hexham.
Constructed places of worship, and re-furnished the chief church at Hexham. Had a lovely performing voice, and supported the recovery of vocal music in British ceremony. First English prelate to speak to the Vatican in a contest. Accepted the Church in England should have been progressively similar to Rome in ritualistic structure. Book of scriptures researcher with an enormous religious library who provided data for Bede’s Ecclesiastical History.
Political interests prompted ruler Ceolwulf of Northumbria being seized in 731, and compelled to enter a cloister. Ceolwulf’s supporters later reestablished him to the position of royalty, and Acca was banished, which presumably shows his association in the overthrow. A few records infer that he fled west, and was named cleric of Whithorn.
