Saint’s Biography
Saint Anastasius, I lived in Antioch, Turkey in the late 500s. He became a patriarch of Antioch in 559. Anastasius was a man of few words, but he had the gift of being able to comfort the haunted and grieving. Anastasius was opposed to the emperor’s political-theological views on the body of Christ, and he was threatened with the dismissal of Emperor Justinian (527-65). But the emperor died before he could take the threat.
In 570, Anastasius was banished from his bishopric for 23 years by Justinian’s nephew, Emperor Justinos II (565-78). A bishop named Gregory was placed in his place. When this Gregory died in 593, Anastasius was reinstated.
Death
Anastasius died in 599. His memorial day is April 21.
