St. Anatolius of Constantinople Biography

Saint Anatolius of Constantinople was known for his simple, strict life. His charity to the poor, his passion for the faith and opposition to heresy.

Born in Alexandria. St. Anatolius was ordained as a deacon by St. Cyril of Alexandria. He attended the Third Ecumenical Council held at Ephesus in the year 431 AD.

He was able to become Patriarch because of Pope Dioscorus I of Alexandria and Emperor Theodosius II. This was soon after the dismissal of Flavian. He was deposed by the Second Council of Ephesus. It was after having been the representative of Pope Dioscorus and the emperor at Constantinople. Shortly after his consecration, St. Anatolius publicly denounced the teachings not only of Eutyches but also those of Nestorius. This after being under suspicion of Eutychianism. Later supporting the letters of Cyril against Nestorius and those of Pope Leo I against Eutyches.

General Council

Working with Pope Leo, he asked Emperor Marcian to summon a general council against Dioscorus and the Eutychians. This was according to Zonaras. During this council St. Anatolius chaired with the Roman legates. After which, the famous 28th canon passed by the council, Constantinople was declared equal in standing with Rome.” Only second in eminence and power to the Pope”. This changed the normal order of authority of the much older sees of Alexandria and Antioch. Thus began the disagreement between St. Anatolius and the Roman pontiff. But, the third canon of First Council of Constantinople of 381 AD declared that The Bishop of Constantinople shall have the privilege of honor after the Bishop of Rome. This because Constantinople is New Rome. This position could be thought of as being political, rather than a doctrinal view.

Protests

Pope Leo protested to Marcian and to Pulcheria that Anatolius had overstepped his jurisdiction. By consecrating Maximinus II as the Patriarch of Antioch. He protested to Anatolius as well.

After the council of Chalcedon, Anatolius received a letter signed by several Egyptian bishops. Asking for his help against Timothy, who was usurping the Patriarch of Alexandria. Anatolius wrote to emperor Leo against Timothy. The emperor requested the advice of St. Anatolius on the unstable state of Alexandria as stated by Evagrius and Nicephorus. According to Edward Gibbon, the crowning of Leo on his accession by St. Anatolius is the first of its kind on record at the time. While in danger of death he was restored to health by Daniel the Stylite. Who had gone to Constantinople to visit him.

St Anatolius was responsible for composing a few hymns.
