Biography

Blessed Bartolomeu dei Martiri Fernandes, Joined the Dominicans on 11 November 1528. Partook in the Council of Trent, and acquainted the Council’s choices with Portugal. Archbishop of Braga, Portugal from 27 January 1559 through 23 February 1582. Constructed medical clinics and hospices in his bishopric, and established the main administrative theological college in Portugal. He composed Biblical analyses, a Portuguese drill, and a Compendium doctrinæ spiritualis. Late in life Pope Gregory XIII enabled him to leave his office, and Bartolomeu went through his most recent eight years as an educator and devoted priest in the religious community of Viana, Portugal.
