Saint Bernard of Corleone’s Life History
Bernard of Corleone was born on February 6 1605 AD, in Corleone, the Kingdom of Sicily, as Filipo latini as the third child in a family of 6 children and born from Leonardo and Francesca Latini. He was baptized on the day of his birth.
He did not receive any formal education. His father was a kind cobbler who was very charitable to the poor as he used to open up his house to them to clean themselves up and be fed. Unfortunately, Filipo’s father died and he used the skills acquired from watching his father do his work, to support his mother before going to become a soldier on May 1 1618 AD.
He was known to be short-tempered and very feisty and challenged any man to a duel whenever he had a disagreement with one. After being involved in a gruesome duel with assassin Vito Canino and costing him his arm,he fled to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin to seek refuge. It was said that he later sought forgiveness from Vito and the two sorted out their differences.
He joined the order’s novitiate on December 13 1632 AD, at Cattanisetta, taking the name Bernardo da Corleone. He imposed great austerities on himself and ended up being known for his compassion. He was said to have moved from one friary to another in the province.
Bernard had a strong devotion to the Madonna, with his biographers pointing out that the Blessed Mother once appeared to him and laid the infant Jesus on his arms and revealing to him the date of his death, four months in advance.
He served as cook or assistant cook and also washed and took care of his compatriots’ garments during his service in the friaries. Due to his austerities, it is possible that he developed rheumatism in his later life stages. He died in Palermo on January 12 1667 AD, after he was said to have repeating the words,”Let’s go”, in his anticipation to his “birth to heaven”, as claimed by believers.
