Saint Burchard of Würzburg Biography
Burchard of Würzburg was born in a wealthy family. However, he had an early calling to the Church working with the poor. Motivated by Saint Boniface, he became a missionary in Germany.
He became the first Bishop of Würzburg, Franconia where he was consecrated by Saint Boniface in 741 and confirmed by Pope Saint Zachary in 743. Under his ministry, all his Christians converted, and he founded several monasteries for his people.
He promoted devotion to Saint Killian who previously worked in the region. He was a favorite of King Pepin the Short. Burchard chaired the party that sought Pope Zachary‘s decision on the succession of the kingship of the Franks. He resigned his bishop profession in 752 AD and spent the rest of his life in solitude and prayer.
